basic qualifications

Physical Qualifications

  • A potential surrogate must be between 21 and 45 years of age.

  • The surrogate should have had at least one term uncomplicated delivery.

  • The surrogate should have had no more than five (5) previous deliveries, of which no more than 3 deliveries by cesarean delivery.

  • The surrogate should have a stable family environment with adequate support to help the surrogate cope with the added stress of pregnancy.

  • The surrogate must be tested negative for sexually transmitted infections including HIV and other communicable infectious diseases that may harm the fetus within 30 days prior to embryo transfer. 

  • The surrogate should have a BMI between18% to 32%.

According to the NYS guideline, clinical factors that should lead to absolute rejection include:

  • HIV diagnosis

  • Laboratory-confirmed Hepatitis B or active/untreated Hepatitis C infection, or physical evidence of hepatitis infection or risk factors (i.e., jaundice, hepatomegaly, icterus; recent tattooing or piercing within the past 6-12 months where the sterile technique was not used)

  • Evidence of substance use disorder.

 

Clinical factors that may lead to rejection include:

  • Laboratory-confirmed sexually transmitted infection, or physical evidence of sexually transmitted infection

  • Recent history or evidence of smallpox vaccination (within 4 weeks).

Psychological Qualifications

Psychological consultation should be conducted by a qualified licensed mental health practitioner to minimize any psychological harm from serving as a surrogate:

  • The surrogate should have no history of a psychiatric diagnosis such as major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, psychosis, or a significant anxiety disorder and no current use or dependency on psychiatric medications.

  • The surrogate should have no history of drug or alcohol abuse. 

  • The surrogate should have a stable family environment with adequate support to help the surrogate cope with the added stress of pregnancy.

  • The surrogate should live in a smoke-free environment during pregnancy. 

 

According to the NYS guidelines, psychosocial factors that should lead to absolute rejection include:

  • Cognitive or emotional inability to comply or consent

  • Abnormal psychological evaluation/testing as determined by the qualified mental health professional

  • Unresolved or untreated addiction, child abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, depression, eating disorders, or traumatic pregnancy, labor, and/or delivery

  • History of major depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, or a significant anxiety disorder

  • Chaotic lifestyle or current major life stressor(s)

  • Inability to maintain a respectful and caring relationship with the intended parent(s)

  • Evidence of emotional inability to separate from or surrender the child at birth

  • Evidence of financial, emotional or reproductive coercion, human trafficking or sex trafficking

If you meet the initial qualifications, we will schedule a video interview and a home visit, following the COVID-19 safe practice guidelines.

We will start the matching process! When a good match is identified, there will be a profile exchange with intended parents, then a video call. If all parties agree, you will officially be matched!

If you are interested to proceed, we will arrange initial physical and psychological evaluations, as well as surrogate training and consultation.
